Uttrakhand
Since the 1950s, the Char Dham Yatra has gained immense importance not only as a sacred pilgrimage but also as a symbol of the collective Hindu religious imagination across India. With the rise of religious tourism and the growing influence of a conservative Hindu population seeking spiritual unity, Char Dham has become a vital destination reflecting the essence of an all-India Hindu culture. Pilgrims from across South Asia and the Indian diaspora—particularly Bengalis, Marwaris, Odias, Marathis, Gujaratis, Delhiites, people from Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand—undertake this spiritual journey in large numbers every year. The pilgrimage season typically runs from mid-April (around April 15) until Diwali (October–November). The peak season is the two months before the monsoon, usually late May to July, when footfall is at its highest. After the rains begin in late July, travel becomes extremely dangerous due to unstable mountain terrain. Even before the monsoon, safety remains a concern as extensive road construction and heavy traffic often destabilize rocks, causing fatal landslides and vehicular accidents. Tragically, mortality rates during a season can surpass 200 lives. Some pilgrims also visit after the rains subside, in the short window before snowfall makes the routes impassable. While October–November brings inhospitable cold at the shrines, many travelers say this is the most breathtaking time to visit—the mountain scenery appears especially vivid after the rains have washed away the dust of the plains, leaving behind crystal-clear views of the Himalayas.
